Construction on the US Navy’s newest submarine, USS Minnesota (SSN 783), will soon begin following the completion of the keel laying at Newport News Shipbuilding, US.

The 377ft-long submarine will have a displacement capacity of 7,800t, dive to depths greater than 800ft and cruise at submerged speeds of 25kt.

The submarine is designed with a nuclear reactor plant that will not require refuelling during the planned life of the ship.

USS Minnesota will be the tenth of a projected 30 Virginia Class submarines being built under a teaming arrangement between Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) and General Dynamics Electric Boat.
