General Dynamics (GD) has received a $1.8bn contract from the US Navy to build another two Zumwalt Class ships, DDG 1001 and DDG 1002.

The Zumwalt Class destroyer is the next-generation, guided-missile naval destroyer and features a low radar profile, an integrated power system and a total ship computing environment infrastructure.

The destroyer is fitted with a wide range of weapons and is designed for surface warfare, anti-aircraft and naval fire support.

DDG-1000, the first vessel in Zumwalt series, is more than 50% complete and is expected to be delivered in 2014.

DDG 1001 is scheduled to be delivered in December 2015, while the DDG 1002 vessel is slated for 2018 delivery.
