Alion Science and Technology has been selected to provide ship design and engineering under the $8bn contract to construct non-combatant vessels as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

The company will work with a Seaspan Marine-led team in the construction of the Joint Support Ship, the Polar Icebreaker, the Offshore Oceanographic Support Vessel, and the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels.

Alion Engineering and Integration Solutions Sector senior vice-president and manager, vice-admiral Scott Fry, said: "These new platforms are critical to meeting Canada’s evolving requirements, from anti-terrorism strategies and curbing illegal activities to polar
ice-breaking and environmental research."

NSPS, based on a 30-year roadmap for the development of new ship platforms, is intended to develop Canada’s maritime capabilities.
