The US Navy has completed alternative fuel testing of the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) 1600-class at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia, US.

During the fuel test and trials, the LCU was operated at full load and different engine speeds to evaluate fuel consumption, exhaust temperatures and engine room temperatures.

The LCU 1600-class vessel, with a displacement of 180t, is capable of transporting combat vehicles and troops from amphibious assault ships to shore.

The test was conducted by the Naval Sea Systems Command and the Program Executive Office as a part of the US Navy’s plan to reduce its petroleum footprint with a 50/50 mix of algae-based biofuel and renewable energy.
