The UK Royal Navy’s interim ice patrol ship, HMS Protector, will receive safety and environmental management support from BMT Isis.

Under a three year contract, the company will develop and sustain the safety and environmental case report (SECR) for maintaining the ship during the 2011-2012 deployment in the Antarctic austral summer.

BMT Isis Project Manager Steve Golder said the SECR will help to address the expectations, requirements and limitations, for operations during the initial deployment.

The company has also developed the Safety and Environmental Case for the Survey Motor Boat (SMB) James Cairn IV under a separate contract.

The 5,000t ship, leased from Norwegian company GC Rieber Shipping for three years, will replace HMS Endurance’s role as an interim Antarctic patrol vessel.

The vessel will support the hydrographic and oceanographic work and help enforce the treaty to ensure the Antarctic environment is fully protected from exploitation.
