The Russian Navy has plans to induct up to ten Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines to bolster its Baltic Sea and Black Sea fleets by 2020, a navy spokesman said.

The modernised Kilo-class submarines will have an underwater speed of 20 knots, a cruising range of 400 miles and will be equipped with 18 torpedoes and eight surface-to-air missiles.

The new submarines will feature stealth technology with extended combat range to strike land, surface and underwater targets.

Currently, the Russian Navy operates 20 diesel-electric submarines, according to RIA Novosti.
