The US Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) has awarded a contract to Data Link Solutions (DLS) to provide multifunctional information distribution system joint tactical radio system (MIDS JTRS) terminals.

Under the $25.8m contract, DLS will provide first full production and fielding (FP&F) MIDS JTRS terminals for the US Navy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, Navy Lab, and Navy Supply (NAVSUP).

DLS director Jack Stevens said: "With the completion of operational testing and approval to enter into full production, we now have a MIDS JTRS software defined terminal meeting today’s warfighter needs with built-in growth capability for the future."

MIDS JTRS features link 16 enhancements, which include improved output, frequency re-mapping and programmable crypto and can incorporate additional communication protocols, including the airborne networking waveform (ANW).

The datalink capability supplies fully integrated real-time data communications, situational awareness and navigation, and digital voice to the user in a jam-resistant, crypto secured package.

“With the completion of operational testing and approval to enter into full production, we now have a MIDS JTRS software defined terminal meeting today’s warfighter needs with built-in growth capability for the future.”

Able to serve as a host platform, the terminal provides the required computer processing to run routing and platform specific applications.

The MIDS JTRS terminal uses software applications for expanded capability and delivers enhanced operational effectiveness without taking in additional space, weight or power.

The new communication and data link terminal can be used onboard aircraft, such as fighters, tankers, transport, command and control and rotary wing, along with maritime and fixed sites.

Under the contract, the company will also supply MIDS JTRS terminals for the US Air Force E-8 JSTARS, RC-135 Rivet Joint, EC-130E Senior Scout, EC-130H Compass Call, Air Force Participating Test Unit, and Warner Robins.
