Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract for the delivery of eight Gyrocam sensor systems to the Canadian Department of National Defense (DND) under the US Marine Corps foreign military sales contract.

With delivery scheduled for third quarter, Lockheed’s system will be installed on Cougar Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.

Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control turreted systems programme director Dana Rocca said that Gyrocam sensor systems are capable of deployment in combat operations supporting critical route-clearance and surveillance missions.

"These systems help save lives by enhancing warfighters’ situational awareness and providing them the ability to detect, identify and track threats from remote distances," Rocca added.

The system integrates high-resolution colour, night vision and thermal sensors in a stabilised gimbal which can be mast-mounded on virtually any ground, airborne, maritime or expeditionary platform to offer clear, 360° surveillance and threat detection.

Lockheed Martin’s sensor systems already support Canadian Armed Forces Expedient Route Opening Capability teams and have also been deployed on Italian Army Navistar MaxxPro MRAP as well as Iveco multi-role medium tactical vehicles. More than 1,100 Gyrocam sensor systems have also been deployed with US and coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
