Alion Science and Technology has received a contract from the US Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to support virtual training for anti-submarine warfare.

Under the $24m contract, the company will design, build and maintain live, virtual, constructive modelling and simulation (LVCMS) capabilities and anti-submarine warfare virtual at-sea training (ASW VAST) and simulation systems.

The agreement also involves further development and maintenance of existing ASW VAST training and simulation systems, in addition to the development of new methods that make use of evolving LVC technologies.

"The ASW VAST and simulation systems are computer-based trainers that support integrated and coordinated ASW tactical training."

Alion senior vice-president and distributed simulation group manager Terri Spoonhour said: "We are excited to assist the navy in developing low-cost, high-fidelity training systems [and] solutions that are designed to support integrated training for both tactical and engineering personnel.

"Under this five-year contract, Alion will continue to the deliver innovative training solutions, as we did under the LVCMS ASW VAST’s predecessor contract, the mission rehearsal tactical team trainer."

The ASW VAST and simulation systems are computer-based trainers that support integrated and coordinated ASW tactical training, in addition to anti-access area denial and cyber warfare training.

Alion has been a principal developer and integrator of a majority of the ASW VAST family of systems, which include the P-3 aircrew tactical team trainer (PACT3), the virtual maintenance performance aid (VMPA) and the common distributed mission training station (CDMTS).
