Fincantieri has unveiled its Multi-Mission Modular Vessel (MMMV), a naval platform designed to accommodate a wide range of missions through rapid reconfiguration, at the Euronaval 2026 exhibition in Paris.

The vessel, according to the company, introduces a flexible approach to ship design by using a standardised hull capable of integrating multiple containerised payloads.

Fincantieri Naval Vessels Division general manager Eugenio Santagata presented the MMMV, describing it as an open-architecture, software-designed vessel built to meet future operational demands.

The 50m vessel is built as a compact, low-manned, and versatile platform with a displacement of 500t and a core crew of six.

It is able to carry 10- or 20ft containerised mission modules, allowing for fast reconfiguration at the quayside to suit a wide range of operational needs.

Fincantieri said the modular payloads can accommodate an array of systems, including loitering munitions, aerial and underwater drones, and launch-and-recovery systems, supporting missions spanning maritime security, surveillance, law enforcement, intelligence gathering, underwater operations, communications intelligence, and sea infrastructure protection.

The concept is also designed for the progressive integration of advanced defence and autonomous technologies, with potential for uncrewed operations in the future.

Fincantieri CEO and general manager Pierroberto Folgiero said: “The Multi-Mission Modular Vessel embodies this vision, combining a highly flexible architecture with the ability to progressively integrate new capabilities throughout its operational life.

“For Fincantieri, modularity is not simply a design feature: it is a new paradigm, a strategic enabler that allows us to deliver platforms that continue to evolve, operationally effective and responsive to changing requirements over time.”

Alongside the vessel launch, Fincantieri signed a Letter of Intent with Danish firm J.A. Solutions to collaborate on advanced modular and containerised systems for reconfigurable naval vessels.

According to the announcement, this partnership will explore new technologies to enhance platform adaptability.

J.A. Solutions brings expertise in integrating a variety of mission modules, including drones, sensors, decoy systems, and communications equipment, as well as the development of interfaces for its seamless incorporation with ship infrastructure.

The agreement was signed at Euronaval 2026 by Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero and J.A. Solutions CEO René Bertelsen.

Both companies said they plan to focus on platforms capable of rapid mission adaptation, seeking to position their technologies for emerging naval requirements.

Folgiero said: “Our collaboration with J.A. Solutions moves precisely in this direction, bringing together innovation and operational excellence to open new possibilities for naval operations.

“It is fully consistent with our strategy of expanding the technological content of our ships and developing flexible solutions capable of responding rapidly to the evolving needs of our customers.”
