Attalon has received a $17.1m contract modification from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to support continued development work under the US Navy’s Songbow programme.
The contract focuses on development of advanced pulsed fibre lasers and a high-power directed energy subsystem intended for potential future naval applications.

As part of the contract, Attalon will develop pulsed fibre lasers designed for remote sensing and illumination applications.
The company will also work on maturing a 400-kilowatt-class directed energy subsystem by integrating a 50-kilowatt laser with a high-performance beam control assembly. This work will be conducted by Attalon’s Directed Energy & Advanced Lasers team based in Beavercreek, Ohio, with a focus on advancing scalable laser and beam control technologies.

The SONGBOW programme is part of broader Department of the Navy efforts to invest in directed energy capabilities. Areas such as scalable fibre laser architectures and precision beam control have been identified as important for developing future operational systems.
The programme is intended to advance key technologies needed to move high-energy laser systems from research and development toward potential field use.

The contract modification builds on Attalon’s prior work in directed energy, laser architectures, precision optics, beam control technologies and integrated subsystems supporting defence programmes.
The company states it is increasing investment in its US-based engineering and manufacturing footprint, growing its technical workforce, and advancing internal research and development initiatives.
