Raytheon, part of RTX, has been awarded a $515m contract by the US Navy to continue supporting the SPY-6 family of radars.

The contract builds on the Integration and Production Support contract granted in June 2023 and involves upgrades to the Navy’s Flight IIA destroyers with the SPY-6(V)4 radar variant.

As part of the sole source award, Raytheon is set to continue supporting the SPY-6 radar family for the US Navy, with support also extending to the government of Germany and the possibility of additional countries through the Foreign Military Sales programme.

Raytheon Naval Power president Barbara Borgonovi said: “With over a decade of demonstrated success at sea, SPY-6 remains the US Navy’s most advanced maritime radar, providing the fleet with unmatched sensing power and multi-mission readiness to counter evolving threats.

“Backed by an $800 million investment to modernise our radar manufacturing facilities, we’re accelerating production and are expecting to double SPY 6 output by 2028.”

The SPY-6 radar family serves as the primary air and missile defence solution on seven classes of US Navy ships.

According to RTX, the radars are designed to maximise the performance of advanced munitions, including Standard Missile variants, by delivering precise targeting and threat data.

The radars can identify and counter various threats, including ballistic and cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, hostile aircraft, and surface ships, and can engage multiple threats simultaneously.

Each SPY-6 radar operates using a modular construction based on radar modular assemblies (RMAs), which are self-contained antenna units.

These RMAs allow the radars to be configured according to the requirements of specific vessel types, a feature described by Raytheon as enabling the Navy’s first scalable radars.

Raytheon develop and produces the SPY-6 systems, as well as other radar products for US and allied forces at its Radar Development Facility in Andover, Massachusetts.

Currently, two commissioned US Navy ships are equipped with SPY-6 radars. The systems are installed and being tested on a further 11 ships.

The Navy plans to deploy the SPY-6 family on more than 50 vessels over the next decade.

In June 2025, Raytheon secured a $646m contract for continued production of the AN/SPY-6(V) series radars for the US Navy.
