This contract announcement follows GDEB’s receiving substantial contract modifications in the first half of 2025.

In March, GDEB was granted a $1.06bn modification to procure materials in anticipation of Virginia-class Block VI submarine construction.

July then saw a $1.85bn contract modification awarded to GDEB for long lead time materials procurement and initiation of preliminary construction activities related to Virginia-class Block VI submarines.

Virginia-class submarines are nuclear-powered fast-attack vessels adept at operating in both shallow littoral zones and deep waters.

Since 1998, the US Navy has been procuring Virginia-class (SSN-774) submarines, with 40 ordered up to the year 2024.

The US Navy’s proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025 includes a request for one Virginia-class vessel, the 41st vessel in the class.

The US Navy intends to allocate $132bn for the acquisition of 12 Columbia-class submarines, which will replace the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines. The first boat is expected to be delivered in 2027.

The two submarine classes represent the present and future of the US Navy’s undersea combat proficiency.
