The radar system is developed at Saab’s research and development centre in Tawazun Industrial Park, Abu Dhabi. Opened in 2017, the centre is used the company to develop and produce a range of defence and security products.

The company notes that the importance of protecting territorial waterways has grown, with implications for both national security and the global economy.

Saab’s new radar system is intended to address these concerns.

It features a compact and modular design that delivers tracking capabilities, particularly for small vessels in challenging coastal areas.

According to the company, it integrates seamlessly into existing infrastructure, such as buildings and bridges, combined with its 360° coverage.

The Coast Control Radar’s non-rotating, phased-array design is based on military technology and is suitable for dual-use applications.

Additionally, its software-based architecture allows for ongoing updates, ensuring high performance and automation levels.

Saab UAE managing director Heléne Bittmann said: “As a world leader in radars, we’re pleased to announce the launch of our Coast Control Radar. As a solution developed by Saab in the UAE, we chose to launch the radar in the Middle East where the safe and reliable transit of maritime waterways is of great importance.

“The Coast Control Radar can provide nations of similar need with a highly effective means of monitoring these key economic lifelines while contributing to the safety and security of those who sail them.”

This launch follows Saab’s recent contract win in December with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, valued at Skr800m ($74.4m).

The contract involves upgrading Sweden’s coastal anti-ship missile system with Saab’s RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile and a new truck-based launcher module.
