Under the contract, Curtiss-Wright’s Mississauga facility in Ontario, Canada, will deliver the critical aircraft handling systems and support to the US Naval Air Warfare Center for use on Constellation Class Frigates (FFG-62).

The ASIST system is designed to enable helicopters landings on free-deck environments with minimal human intervention, even in challenging sea conditions.

It uses precision helicopter position sensing equipment to track the aircraft’s position during descent, offering the pilots with visual cues for safe and accurate landings.

The contract is part of a larger five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity agreement that could be worth up to $100m.

Curtiss-Wright chair and CEO Lynn Bamford said: “We are pleased to have been selected by CCC to continue to provide our experience and expertise as a leading supplier of integrated shipboard helicopter handling systems operating at extreme seas conditions.

“This award reflects our commitment to provide the most advanced and reliable aircraft handling systems to support the safe landing and traversing of Naval manned aircraft for the US Navy and allied forces.”

Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), the US division of the Italian shipbuilder, began construction of the first Constellation-class vessel, the future USS Constellation (FFG 62), in April 2024.

The company secured a $795m contract in 2020 for the lead frigate, with options for nine additional ships, potentially bringing the total cost to $5.5bn.

Constellation-class frigates are intended to perform in a variety of missions, including anti-air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and electronic warfare, operating in both littoral and blue water environments.

The frigates will be the first new class to join service with the US Navy since the retirement of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class FFGs in 2015.

In 2023, Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division was awarded a contract by Navantia for the supply of five ASIST systems to be used on the Spanish Navy’s F110 Class Frigates.
