Engineering company Amec Foster Wheeler has secured a contract to deliver research and technology (R&T) services for the UK Ministry of Defence's (MoD) naval nuclear propulsion programme (NNPP).

The R&T contract will cost nearly £35m over five years.

UK Defence Minister Harriett Baldwin said: “Long-term investment in innovative research and technology like this is absolutely essential to ensuring that Britain’s nuclear programme remains cutting-edge.

“Underpinned by the UK’s rising Defence budget and £178bn ten-year equipment plan, this new deal will help protect Britain and secure scores of highly skilled jobs in Warrington and Dorset.”

The current deal between Amec Foster Wheeler and UK MoD will be able to sustain nearly 70 job opportunities at the company’s offices and laboratories in Warrington and Dorchester in the UK.

The UK facilities have qualified and skilful technicians and subject matter experts, who perform desk-based analysis and laboratory testing, while also delivering programme, project and technical management services.

The current contract involves critical areas of capability such as materials performance, materials science, thermal hydraulics, modelling, code development, and non-destructive testing and examination.

Amec Foster Wheeler has offered services to the UK MoD’s NNPP for a number of decades.
