Marine Sonic Technology (MSTL) is a leading provider of ultra-high resolution side-scan sonar systems for many applications.

The company’s Sea Scan® product line is one of the most trusted in the world for underwater imaging. The US Navy uses many of the systems for accurate, precise high-resolution underwater imaging for naval units such as the Mobile Diving and Salvage Teams (MDSU), Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD), and the Underwater Construction Teams (SeaBee UCT).

Ultra-high resolution side-scan sonar

From locating submerged mines to monitoring pier platforms MSTL has a side-scan sonar system system for every application. Offering high-definition digital and adaptive CHIRP models, the systems can be configured for stand-alone, towed and deep tow systems, along with AUV and ROV applications. With the highest resolution transducer on the market today at 1,800kHz, MSTL provides you with the power to see the most miniscule details of your target.

We offer many transducer packages with frequencies ranging from 150kHz to 1,800kHz. MSTL systems ship standard with your choice of dual frequencies with typical set ups at 300 kHz / 900kHz, 600kHz /1,200kHz and 900kHz / 1,800kHz.

Side-scan sonar systems

The Sea Scan® HDS is MSTL’s fully digital towed system and is the backbone of rugged, easy-to-deploy towed side-scan sonars worldwide. It is one of the most powerful yet easy-to-use systems in the industry, and resilient against rugged naval applications. The HDS also has the ability to integrate with the Marine Magnetics SeaSpy Magnetometer. Ask about MSTL’s Mag Integration Kit, which allows users to tow both systems on a single cable, fully integrating the two systems.

The Sea Scan® ARC Explorer is MSTL’s more advanced adaptive CHIRP towed system. Providing more flexibility than any other system, the ARC Explorer has interchangeable transducers, which allows the user to swap out the entire transducer in less than five minutes on the boat deck. Doing this provides the full range of frequencies at your finger tips without the need to purchase multiple towfish. The system is fully ruggedized and milled from a single piece of billet aluminum, with expansion ports for later upgrades.

The Sea Scan® ARC Scout is MSTL’s adaptive CHIRP embedded system for the AUV and ROV markets. The ARC Scout is the smallest dual simultaneous embedded side-scan on the market, designed to fit in almost any AUV or ROV currently in use today. Ask your AUV/ROV dealer if they carry the Sea Scan ARC Scout.

Its all-inclusive ultra-compact package measures 9.9cm x 9.4cm x 5.6cm, with an alternate configuration at 9.9cm x 18.7cm x 3.8cm. The Scout’s virtually plug-and-play installation and minimal power usage make it the perfect choice for AUV and ROV’s that have minimal room or power to spare, and need a compact unit that exceeds the expectations of systems twice its size and consume three times the wattage.

Sea Scan® Survey software

MSTL has created the most intuitive and powerful software package available called Sea Scan® Survey. With extremely powerful tools and ease-of-use, it can handle almost any task without requiring extensive training. With new operators arriving every day, most units need rapid training to get operators up-to-speed as soon as possible. With Sea Scan Survey an operator can be fully trained in a matter of hours and be running surveys efficiently within a day or two.

Sea Scan Survey collects and saves raw data, allowing for manipulation without destruction. A novice operator can make changes and adjustments with full confidence that they will not destroy the survey. The user can adjust gains and settings on the fly with full confidence that their adjustments can be reverted or readjusted at anytime during the survey, or even in post processing.

Warranty and customer service

MSTL provides a full three-year warranty, which is the longest in the industry. Three times longer than most side-scan sonars, in fact. Staff are also available for technical assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will be given direct contact with MSTL’s technical care team, who have years of practical experience using and troubleshooting these systems in the field. Customers can get the answers when they need it, during the mission on the boat.

About MSTL

Marine Sonic Technology has been in business since the early 1990s and prides itself on having the best relationships with its customers than any other side-scan company. You will not find another company that will do everything possible to ensure the success of your mission.

Based in Yorktown, Virginia, US, MSTL is always open for tours of its facility, and visitors are welcome to stop in and meet the owner and founder Martin Wilcox along with his staff, and see how MSTL’s systems are designed, developed and manufactured from conception to implementation.
