The US Navy’s Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (CSG) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 have conducted strike missions in Afghanistan as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (OFS).

OFS is the US counterterrorism operation currently being carried out in Afghanistan.

The mission in the South Asian country is primarily focused on a number of specific targets in Helmand province.

It aims to disrupt Taliban revenue generation, training camps and command and control (C2) nodes.

The US airstrikes also intend to maintain pressure on the Taliban throughout the winter period.

CSG 9 commander rear admiral Steve Koehler said: “These airstrikes are part of the coalition effort to counter terrorism and enhance stability in the region.

USS Theodore Roosevelt initially left its homeport for a regularly scheduled deployment to the US 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility on 6 October.

The US Navy’s CVW-17 squadrons have launched approximately 100 combat sorties in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) since 1 December in order to intensify the fight against ISIS.

CVW- 17 squadrons comprise the Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113, VFA 94, VFA 22, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 312, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 139, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 116.

Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6 and Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 73 have also taken part in the recent missions.

USS Theodore Roosevelt was last deployed to the US 5th Fleet in 2015 during the ship’s homeport shift from Norfolk, Virginia.
