The US Navy has awarded a $78.84m contract to BAE Systems for the maintenance and modernisation of USS Shoup (DDG 86), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer (DDG).

If the navy exercises all options in the firm-fixed-price contract, the order’s total value could increase to $87.6m.

The scope of the depot modernisation period availability includes dry-docking the ship and performing underwater hull preservation works.

In addition, BAE Systems will upgrade the ship’s Aegis combat system and its command and control equipment, and rehabilitate crew living spaces.

Commissioned in June 2002, the USS Shoup is the 36th ship in the Arleigh Burke-class and named in honour of former commandant of the Marine Corps general David Shoup.

Last year, the guided-missile destroyer was deployed in the Oceania Maritime Security Initiative (OMSI) that is aimed at improving domain awareness and supporting law enforcement operations.

The company also operates four full-service shipyards, offering eight dry-docks/railways, and pier space and ship support services.
