The US Navy has announced that the selected restricted availability (SRA) of the Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered supercarrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) reached 50% completion milestone.
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Ship Repair Facility (PSNS & IMF) and Japan Regional Maintenance Center team is working on the SRA programme.

Last November, Ronald Reagan arrived back in Japan after a six-month Indo-Pacific deployment.
In early December last year, the project team, comprising PSNS & IMF Detachment Yokosuka employees, along with PSNS & IMF and Norfolk Naval Shipyard employees on temporary duty to Japan and Ship Repair Facility, Yokosuka personnel, started critical path work on the project.
The official project started in January this year.
Deputy project superintendent commander Eric Thurkins said: “We had folks here ready to help with temporary systems and do the shipboard assessments we weren’t able to accomplish while the ship was at sea, due to Covid-19 restrictions.

So far, major SRA work completed include non-skid replacement on the flight deck and hangar bay, aircraft elevator repair, as well as valve and component repairs.
NAVSEA noted that the team applied ‘tube cleaning innovations’ from previous availabilities, including USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 62).
Thurkins added: “We were able to clean 53,000 tubes with only 101 re-cleans needed, a failure rate of only 0.2%. The time to both accomplish this and the reduction in re-work was significant. This method is safer and results in a better working environment.”
