The US Navy has taken the delivery of its 13th Freedom-class littoral combat ship (LCS), the future USS Marinette (LCS 25).

The newest ship was handed over to the US Navy by Lockheed Martin last week at Fincantieri Marinette Marine’s (FMM) shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin, US.

LCS programme manager captain Andy Gold said: “Today marks a significant milestone in the life of the future USS Marinette.

“I look forward to the commissioning of Marinette later this year and recognising the contribution of her namesake town and the great shipbuilders who bring these warships to life, ensuring they are ready to accomplish mission tasking in support of our nation’s maritime strategy.”

The latest milestone builds on the successful culmination of LCS 25’s acceptance trials in November last year.

The trials were conducted to assess and validate the performance and capabilities of different systems, including main propulsion, auxiliaries and electrical systems, equipped onboard Marinette.

It ensured that the vessel is capable of undertaking tasks at the sea.

The tests also required LCS 25 to demonstrate its operational readiness and capabilities. The full power demonstrations included anchor drop test, steering and quick reversal checks as well as combat system detect-to-engage sequence tests.

In the next stage, the ship will undergo a series of post-delivery certification and qualification activities to prepare for its final deployment with the fleet.

Commissioning of the newly delivered Freedom-class LCS is expected to take place in June this year, following which the new ship will be homeported in Mayport, Florida, US.

Launched in November 2020, Marinette is equipped with ‘combining gear correction’, which aims to fix a fleet-wide flaw, to support unrestricted operations.
