The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of two possible foreign military sales (FMSs) of multi-mission surface combatant (MMSC) ships and MEKO-class frigate modernisation to Greece.
Approved by the US State Department, the total estimated cost of the two FMSs and associated equipment is $9.4bn.

As per information released by the US DSCA, an estimated cost of $2.5bn will cover the FMS of the MEKO-class frigate modernisation, while another estimated $6.9bn will be allocated to buy four MMSC ships.
Under the $2.5bn FMS, Greece has requested to procure equipment and services to repair, update, and improve four existing Hellenic Navy MEKO-class frigates.
The upgrades will include eight Close in Weapon Systems, Phalanx BLK 1B Baseline 2 upgrade kits, four MK 45, 5in 54 calibre gun overhauls, four MK 49 Guided Missile Launcher Systems, four COMBATSS-21 Combat Management Systems, four AN/SQS-56 Sonar overhauls, and many others.
Raytheon Missiles and Defense, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and VSE will serve as the principal contractors for this FMS.

The principal contractor of this FMS is Lockheed Martin.
DSCA said: “The proposed sale will improve Greece’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing an effective combatant deterrent capability to protect maritime interests and infrastructure in support of its strategic location on NATO’s southern flank.”
The acquisition will ‘enhance stability and maritime security in the Eastern Mediterranean region and contribute to security and strategic objectives of Nato and the United States’.
In August this year, DSCA notified Congress of a FMS of Aegis-class destroyer sustainment support and services to Japan.
