In December 2024, the German federal government had placed an order for four more Type 212CD submarines, raising their total to six.
This joint procurement effort between Germany and Norway has now reached its maximum planned capacity of 12 submarines.

The Type 212CD submarines offer advanced features such as improved situational awareness and enhanced connectivity with allied forces, catering to the operational demands of Nato, including missions in the Arctic region.
The collaborative approach benefits both German and Norwegian industries through shared research, training, crew, logistics, and maintenance, ultimately reducing costs and increasing value.
The next phase of this collaborative programme may see its extension to Canada, with the potential inclusion of up to 12 submarines.
TKMS, together with its German and Norwegian counterparts, is actively participating in the competitive bidding process to secure this expansion.
The company supplies systems for naval surface vessels and submarines and for maritime electronics and security technologies.
In June 2025, TKMS signed a 10-year contract valued at more than €800m ($937m) for the modernisation of the German Navy’s six Type 212A submarines.
