With a diameter of 200mm, the AUV is rated for depths of either 500 metres (m) or 1000m.

The contract, valued at Skr190m ($17.46m), is scheduled to run through 2028 and includes options for renewal. This framework contract allows for subsequent specific orders by FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces as needed.

FMV strategic purchaser Johan Björck notes that the system’s operational flexibility allows it to be deployed from different-sized platforms or directly from a dock.

Additionally, its adoption by various Nato-member navies enhances the Swedish Navy’s capability to operate in conjunction with allied forces.

According to GlobalData’s report titled “Sweden Defense Market 2024-2029”, Sweden’s defence budget hit $14.1bn in 2024, marking a 43.3% increase from the previous year.

The 2020-2024 budget saw a 23.9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

Sweden’s acquisition budget stands at $4.8bn in 2024, making up 34.0% of the total, with projections indicating it could rise to $6.4bn (35.1% of the total) by 2029.

The Gavia programme, which initiated the development of these AUVs, began in 1999 as a collaborative project with the University of Iceland.

Since the first sales to domestic customers in Iceland in 2000, Teledyne Gavia has specialised in the production of AUVs, including the Gavia, Osprey, and SeaRaptor class vehicles.

In 2022, Teledyne Marine – Vehicles announced that the Polish Ministry of Defence, through Remontowa Shipbuilding, had acquired three additional GAVIA AUVs for integration into the next set of Kormoran II Class mine countermeasure vessels .
