It forms part of efforts to update the Swedish Armed Forces’ fleet with technology aimed at strengthening underwater surveillance and operational procedures.

The agreement between Teledyne Marine and FMV provides for GAVIA AUVs to support multiple tasks linked to fleet modernisation.

These vehicles use a modular architecture that enables them to adapt quickly to various missions, including mine countermeasures, hydrography, intelligence gathering, seabed mapping, and surveillance operations.

GAVIA AUVs are designed for deployment from ships or shore and can operate in depths up to either 500 metres (m) or 1,000m, depending on configuration.

The latest systems are equipped with EdgeTech 2205 side-scan sonar and Teledyne Flir Blackfly-S cameras.

The modular setup allows for the addition of further payloads such as synthetic aperture sonar, magnetometers, and multibeam echosounders.

GAVIA AUVs are used for a variety of applications including research, monitoring, surveillance, mine countermeasures (MCM), search and rescue (SAR), and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training.

Teledyne Technologies president and CEO George Bobb said: “As the maritime battlespace evolves, including risks to critical subsea infrastructure, Teledyne’s autonomous underwater systems provide low-cost and long duration subsea surveillance.

“In addition to complete air, land and subsea unmanned systems, Teledyne provides a wide range of imaging subsystems and software for our customers’ unmanned aerial vehicles, counter-unmanned aircraft systems and maritime autonomous surface vessels.”

Teledyne Marine has reported the delivery of over 12,000 APEX floats and more than 1,275 Slocum gliders, as of January 2026.

Over 600 Slocum gliders have been delivered to Nato naval users. Eighteen navies have acquired the GAVIA AUV system.

Teledyne’s uncrewed subsea technology is currently in use with several Nato and AUKUS navies.
