The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has officially transferred several vehicle-based platforms designed for heavy coastal robots to the Swedish Armed Forces.

The platform, developed to support the RBS 15 Mk2 naval target robot, represents a step in developing next-generation systems. Anders Brunander, project manager at FMV, highlighted the platform’s adaptability and stressed its readiness for the upcoming RBS 15 Mk4, which promises expanded capabilities, including land-based target engagement.

“These units of the heavy coastal robot platform create an expanded capability that is in demand due to the rapid changes in the outside world,” remarked Brunander. “Now there is an opportunity for the Swedish Armed Forces to try out the delivered units and provide feedback with improvements to the next generation, which is already on order, he continued.

The handover ceremony emphasises Sweden’s proactive approach to adapting to evolving global security challenges, ensuring readiness with technologies designed to safeguard Sweden coastal defence and maritime interests. The collaboration between FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces remains important in maintaining readiness in a dynamic geopolitical landscape.

Sweden’s naval capabilities have recently received a boost. FMV has initiated the procurement of four multi-purpose barges to enhance maritime resupply operations. Concurrently, Saab secured a contract valued at approximately Skr400m ($37.6m) for ten combat boats, showing Sweden’s commitment to fortifying naval defences amidst escalating Baltic Sea tensions.

Russia’s state arms export company, Rosoboronexport, unveiled a new lineup of robotic motor boats at the Fleet-2024 conference in St Petersburg in response to evolving global military strategies.
