Serco, a global services provider, has clinched a contract extension, ensuring its continued role in delivering engineering and airfield support to the Royal Navy’s helicopter fleet.

The new extension, announced on August 13, 2024, extends Serco’s contract to provide these services until March 31, 2026, building on its foundation work since being awarded the initial contract in July 2020.

This extension highlights Serco’s role in maintaining operational readiness for the Royal Navy, particularly at Royal Naval Air Stations (RNAS) Yeovilton and Culdrose. Serco’s support encompasses a range of activities, including operational assistance for the Merlin Helicopter Force at RNAS Culdrose and engineering support for the Wildcat Maritime Force at RNAS Yeovilton.

Serco has secured multiple contract extensions across various domains with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). In 2022, Serco was awarded a three-year extension to maintain the solid-state phased array radar (SSPAR) at RAF Fylingdales, which is necessary for ballistic missile early warning.

Within the same year, the MoD also granted Serco a £200m contract to deliver marine services for the Royal Navy, including vessel movement, maintenance, and support for military training. Operations will span six sites in the UK and overseas.

In addition to technical support, Serco’s services cover airfield operations 24/7, 365 days a year. This support structure ensures that the Royal Navy’s helicopter units remain at peak operational capacity, facilitating training and mission readiness.

Doug Umbers, Managing Director of Serco’s Defence division, expressed enthusiasm about the contract extension, stating, “Our teams at RNAS Culdrose and Yeovilton make a real impact by providing critical engineering support to help keep the Royal Navy flying 365 days a year and we are delighted to have had this contract extended by a further 12 months.”

Serco’s commitment extends beyond operational support to contributions to workforce development. With nearly 100 staff members and 22 apprentices currently employed across the two bases, Serco has trained the next generation of engineers. Over the past four years, 20 apprentices have completed their training, and ten more will be onboarded in January 2025.
