The Indian Navy’s second Project 15B class (P15B) indigenous stealth destroyer ‘Mormugao’ has begun its first sea trials on 19 December.

Mormugao is scheduled to be commissioned in the mid of next year.

It features a variety of indigenous technologies and significantly contributes to India’s ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.

According to a press statement released by the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD), the indigenous stealth destroyer will add significantly to the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy.

The MoD said that the “commencement of sea trials of Mormugao is testimony to the cutting-edge capabilities of MDSL and the strong indigenous shipbuilding tradition of a modern and vibrant India”.

India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is under contract to build four Project 15B warships for the Indian Navy. The contract for this project was awarded in 2011.

The warships are designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house design organisation ‘Directorate of Naval Design’.

The four warships have been named after major Indian cities, namely Imphal, Surat, Mormugao and Visakhapatnam.

Project 15B features overall indigenous content of nearly 75%.

Each Project 15B ship is 163m long and features advanced technology. The destroyers have a displacement exceeding 7,400t.

Last month, MDSL commissioned the first Project 15B stealth guided-missile destroyer, INS Visakhapatnam. The fourth Project-75 submarine, INS Vela, was commissioned on 25 November.
