Sarcos Robotics has received a contract from the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to deliver a pre-production version of its Guardian XO full-body, autonomously powered robotic exoskeleton.

The XO offers an endurance of up to eight hours per battery charge. It can operate at three miles per hour and carry up to 200lbs of payload.

The exoskeleton is also designed to ‘hot swap’ rechargeable batteries in the field. This ability ensures longer run-time for XO.

This latest contract comes after Sarcos reached agreements to partner with both the US Air Force (USAF) and the US Navy to develop and evaluate variations of the XO for use cases specific to the services.

“The collaboration will include full-body, powered exoskeletons, and man-portable inspection robots.”

Sarcos formed a partnership last week with US Navy’s Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (IMF) to jointly develop robotic technologies for use in naval shipyards.

The collaboration will include full-body, powered exoskeletons, and man-portable inspection robots.

Sarcos and PSNS & IMF will evaluate the Guardian XO exoskeleton and the Guardian S inspection robot for use across several work environments and tasks.

The partners will initially focus on manipulation of heavy items, use of power tools and inspection of confined spaces. These focus areas are intended to support the maintenance, modernisation, and retirement of ships and submarines.

In August last year, Sarcos bagged a contract to develop a second exoskeleton for the USAF. Under this contract, the company is required to supply an exoskeleton that will be able to lift loads of up to 80lbs.

The company has recently made power and performance enhancements to the XO.

The improvements are related to power consumption, control system functionality and load transfer.
