The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with Russia’s state-owned defence export company Rosoboronexport to modernise the radar and missile systems of the Indian Navy’s Delhi-class ships.
According to the MoD, the contract will modernise Air Defence Complex Kashmir and Radar Fregat MAE on the Delhi Class Project 15 (P-15) vessels.

The upgrade is intended to improve the air defence capability of the P-15 destroyers.
The ministry announced that the major overhaul of the subsystems would be performed in India.
India’s MoD said in a statement: “In addition, manufacturing of critical hardware would also be undertaken in partnership with the Indian industry.”
The Indian Navy has three Delhi-class ships called INS Delhi, INS Mysore, and INS Mumbai.

Indian firm Mazagon Dock built the ships under the Project 15 programme. The first vessel in the class was commissioned in 1997.
At 163m long, the Delhi-class vessel has a displacement of 6,700t and a crew of 40 officers and 310 sailors.
The ships have an operational range of 4,500 nautical miles and can achieve a maximum speed of 32k.
They are equipped with anti-ship, anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapon systems.
The Indian Navy’s three active service P-15s are armed with Kh-35 anti-ship cruise missiles, a Barak air defence missile system, a naval gun and other weapons systems.
The P-15s feature a helicopter deck to support two helicopters. The navy built the Kolkata-class destroyers as a follow-on of the Delhi-class vessels.
