With financial backing from the UK Ministry of Defence, this new establishment will support Rolls-Royce Submarines’ partnership with the Submarine Delivery Agency on the Dreadnought and AUKUS programmes.

According to Rolls-Royce Submarines, this investment reflects the government’s commitment to make the UK’s nuclear deterrent a national initiative, under the guidance of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.

Rolls-Royce Submarines president Steve Carlier said: “The Cardiff Satellite Office opening shows Rolls-Royce Submarines’ intent on attracting the brightest and best from across the UK. It also highlights the UK-wide economic benefit that investing in defence can bring.

“We are in a time of unprecedented growth for our business, and Rolls-Royce is dedicated to developing the current and future generations of nuclear talent to help power our ambitions.

“With the work secured from our AUKUS contracts, alongside the Dreadnought programme, and our future Novel Nuclear ambitions, there has never been a better and more exciting time to join our industry.”

In March 2023, it was announced that Rolls-Royce Submarines will be providing all nuclear reactor plants to power new attack submarines as part of an agreement between Australia, the UK, and the US.

The company currently employs over 5,000 people engaged in designing, manufacturing, and supporting pressurised water reactors for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.

Rolls-Royce established its Nuclear Skills Academy in Derby in 2022, which will provide 200 apprenticeships each year for at least a decade.

Beyond new developments, the company continues its support for existing submarine projects, including the Astute and Dreadnought boat build programmes. This includes supplying reactor plants and related components.

Rolls-Royce also offers global frontline support for reactor plant equipment from its Operations Centre in Derby and assists submarines at various naval locations including Barrow-in-Furness, Devonport, and Faslane.

Earlier in October 2025, Rolls-Royce Submarines signed a memorandum of understanding with Siemens to advance digital optimisation within engineering sectors.
