A consortium of Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group has received a €1.7bn ($1.9bn) contract from Occar, the international organisation for joint armament co-operation, for the construction of four logistic support ships for the French Navy.
The contract was awarded on behalf of the French defence procurement agency ‘Direction Générale de l’Armement’.

The new ships will replace the French Navy’s current logistic fleet of single-hulled vessels that entered active service in the 1970s and 1980s. The consortium is expected to deliver the first two vessels by 2025.
With a fuel capacity of 13,000m³, the tankers are designed to provide logistical support to the combat vessels of French and allied navies.
Chantiers de l’Atlantique Naval Programs senior vice-president Yves Pelpel said: “Through this order, our expertise in the design and construction of complex ships, civilian or military, is acknowledged once again.
“After the construction of the Mistral, Tonnerre and Dixmude LHD platforms, we are proud to contribute again, in partnership with Naval Group, to the modernisation of the French Navy’s fleet.”

By GlobalDataLogistic support ships are double-hulled ships that will carry fuel for vessels, jet fuel for aircraft, weapons and ammunition, spare parts, as well as food.
They will be based on the Italian LSS Vulcano, which is the first ship of the Italian-French logistic support ships programme managed by Occar.
Chantiers de l’Atlantique will design and construct the ships, while Naval Group will handle the design, supply and integration of combat and military systems, as well as certain functions such as cybersecurity and electromagnetic compatibility.
Fincantieri, which is constructing LSS Vulcano, will build the forward hull section of the four vessels.
