Mission-critical information technology (IT) infrastructure solutions provider ViON has received a capacity as a service (CaaS) contract from the US Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR).

The seven-year deal is worth $50m, and will address data centre infrastructure requirements for research, development, testing and evaluation (RDT&E) core infrastructures and laboratories, as well as data centre environments.

ViON will be responsible for offering on-premises CaaS under the agreement, which aligns the US Department of Defense (DoD) to meet the provisions of the US Government’s Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI).

The US Navy will be able to scale capacity, in form of networking, compute and storage with the CaaS acquisition model, thereby resulting in a low total cost of ownership, in addition to reduced risk and smoother access to technology.

ViON CEO Tom Frana said: “We have been providing IT as a service for over 15 years, delivering network, compute and storage to federal agencies under this type of service model.

"ViON is pleased to provide the navy with the capacity necessary to drive critical RDT&E missions with the versatility to quickly scale according to need."

ViON’s CaaS is vendor-neutral and provides significant flexibility to SPAWAR, with on-premise support for the navy's command facilities located in San Diego, California; New Orleans, Louisiana; Charleston, South Carolina; and Norfolk, Virginia.

The deal will also enable SPAWAR to adapt swiftly to changing needs by implementing technology updates within a few weeks instead of months.
