The sonobuoys are designed to be able to transmit an acoustic signal source and accept underwater signals of interest; this data is then delivered to monitoring units for analysis.

The systems can be deployed to assess environmental circumstances and help install top search tactics, as well as communication with friendly vessels.

In addition, they can be deployed during peacetime and combat operations to detect, classify, and localise adversary submarines.
