The British Royal Navy has selected Babcock as the preferred bidder to become the marine systems support partner (MSSP) for the navy's new Queen Elizabeth-class (QEC) aircraft carriers and Daring-class Type 45 destroyers.
Babcock has been chosen for all four elements of the MSSP role, which is a UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) programme potentially worth £360m over a seven-year period.

The company will operate as the systems technical authority for the platform and propulsion systems on the two classes of the Royal Navy vessels, subject to contract.
Babcock and a number of primary support partners will manage the technical configuration of the systems and manage obsolescence issues, in addition to working with the equipment suppliers to develop and handle system upgrades.
MSSP comprises all power and propulsion systems such as diesel engines, gas turbines, platform management systems, electrical distribution, and a wide range of on-board systems.
These include air conditioning, waste management, valves and pumps, filtration, fire-fighting equipment, lifts, cranes, highly mechanised equipment, and refuel-at-sea capabilities.

By GlobalDataThe MSSP deal will see Babcock deliver spare parts and in-service support in order to eliminate risks to maritime equipment availability, which can result from routine maintenance and unforeseen in-service failures.
The company has also received a seven-year contract from the UK MoD for all six maritime equipment consumables (MEC) packages.
Babcock chief executive Archie Bethel said: “Our selection as the MoD and Royal Navy's partner for MSSP and MEC represents a real vote of confidence in our capabilities and performance as the Royal Navy's key support partner.
“This has been a highly successful year for our Equipment Management Operations Centre (EMOC) team, and we look forward to supporting the iconic Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers as they are delivered into service.”
The £70m MEC contracts entail Babcock providing a supply management capability, thereby ensuring that the consumable spares needs and requirements of Royal Navy vessels and submarines are met.
The company will also have overall responsibility for the project, quality, risk, obsolescence and performance management.
