MAN Diesel & Turbo has also secured an additional order to supply the systems for the Italian Navy’s second shipset.

The first of a class of seven PPAs is currently being built at Fincantieri Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia.

The deal is part of the Italian Navy’s major fleet renewal project known as Programma di Rinnovamento Navale, which intends to modernise and upgrade the navy’s fleet and will involve the decommissioning of several older vessels.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Four-Stroke Marine head Lex Nijsen said: “MAN Diesel & Turbo is proud of having contributed with the MAN 175D to such an ambitious and technologically advanced fleet renewal programme.

“The close cooperation with Fincantieri and the Italian Navy has been the key factor for a successful project and has laid the foundation for securing the order for the second shipset.”

The gensets for the PPA-class have been specifically customised for Italian Navy applications and feature a double-elastic mounting layout to fulfil strict vibration and shock requirements.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has integrated two of the units with high-performance noise enclosures to ensure a very low acoustic signature, as well as MAN-designed SCR exhaust after-treatment systems, which are in line with the latest IMO TIER III emission regulations.

In addition, the company has secured another order to deliver main and auxiliary engines for a logistics support ship (LSS) and landing helicopter dock (LHD).
