HII's Ingalls Shipbuilding has secured a $1.46bn, fixed-price-incentive contract to provide detailed design and development of an amphibious transport dock for USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28).
LPD 28 is named Fort Lauderdale in order to honour the Florida city’s historic ties with the US Navy.

Ingalls Shipbuilding president Brian Cuccias said: “This contract demonstrates the confidence the navy has in our shipbuilders’ performance in this programme.
“Building LPD 28 allows the entire LPD industrial base to maintain a hot production line so that our sailors and marines receive quality amphibious warships as efficiently and affordably as possible.”
Ties between the US Navy and Fort Lauderdale date back to the 1830s and also include a major naval training centre during the First World War.
To date, the shipbuilding company has developed and supplied ten vessels for the San Antonio-class of warships.

The USS Fort Lauderdale will operate as the 12th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship deployed by the US Navy.
The 684ft-long and 105ft-wide ships of the San Antonio-class are an important of US Navy’s amphibious assault force. They are used to transport and land marines, their equipment and supplies onshore through air cushion or conventional landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles, which are supported by helicopters or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.
