Indra has agreed to partner with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) to develop and integrate sensors for the Spanish Navy's future F110 frigate.
Under the partnership agreement, which has been reached under the Industrial Plan for the PROTEC F110 programme UPM will collaborate with Indra on analysis, design and development of features for the identification friend or foe (IFF) system.

Additional areas of collaboration include the X-band radar for the surveillance of surface and low-flying aerial targets, and the radar electronic support measures (RESM) system.
The other areas of partnership between the parties will be determined during the later stages of the programme.
Work under the agreement will be carried out until 2019.
Last year, the Spanish Government authorised a first $150.3m research and development (R&D) contract to develop the F-110 series from 2015 until 2020.

By GlobalDataTo be built by state-owned firm Navantia, the F-110 frigates are expected to replace the Spanish Navy’s six Santa María-class frigates (F-80) from 2022 until 2030.
Indra is currently working with Navantia in the PROTEC F110 R&D programme to equip the new Spanish vessel with a novel mast, which will be designed to house all of the frigate’s sensors.
In addition, Indra is supporting the development of primary radars for aerial and surface surveillance; the secondary radar or IFF system; the RESM and communications systems, and their countermeasure systems; and the Link 16 communications system.
All of these systems will be integrated into the Navantia SCOMBA combat system.
