Golten Worldwide’s Green Technologies business unit has been contracted by the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organization to install 16 optimarin ballast systems (OBS) on the Royal Netherlands Navy’s (RNLN) ten vessels.
Under the contract, Green Technologies will support the engineering and installation of Optimarin’s UV based ballast water treatment systems (BWTS) into the RNLN’s vessels.

The ten vessels include Landing Platform Dock (LPD) vessels HNLMS Rotterdam and HNLMS Johan de Witt, the frigates HNLMS Tromp, HNLMS Evertsen, HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën and HNLMS De Ruyter, as well as special purpose vessels MOV Van Kinsbergen, HNLMS Pelikaan, HNLMS Luymes and HNLMS Snellius.
Work under the contract will be carried out through 2016 and 2017. Installation of the ballast treatment systems will be performed during the vessels’ scheduled maintenance periods.
The company will ensure the systems remain in compliance with the pending International Maritime Organization (IMO) and existing US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations on ballast water treatment.
Optimarin’s BWTS is based on filtration as a pre-treatment and emits high doses of UV irradiation to destroy marine organisms, viruses and bacteria, without hindering the normal operation of the vessel.

By GlobalDataThe modularly built system can be easily installed on new vessels, as well as retrofitted into an existing vessel.
The BWTS is approved by ship classification society DNV GL and bears full compliance with IMO Ballast Water Management Convention. It is equipped with an American Meteorological Society (AMS) certificate from the USCG.
The system awaits its full USCG approval after a successful completion of all marine water tests.
