The first upgraded Brazilian Navy Super Lynx Mk21B helicopter has successfully completed its maiden flight at Leonardo’s Yeovil facility in southwest England.

The helicopter is the first of eight Super Lynxs that are undergoing a modernisation programme, which will see the installation of two new generation CTS800-4N engines. This will increase payload and mission effectiveness, as well as provide the helicopters with major performance improvements.

The new generation CTS800-4N engines are already used on the British Army Lynx Mk9A, the Super Lynx 300 and the AW159.

Additional enhancements include the installation of a new glass cockpit, which is complimented by an advanced avionic suite comprising a tactical processor and a satellite based navigation system.

The helicopters will also feature civil navigation aids including a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS), automatic identification system (AIS), and radar warning receiver / electronic surveillance measures, which will be integrated with countermeasures dispensers and a full night vision goggle (NVG) compatible cockpit with a new electrically powered rescue hoist.

In 2014, the Brazilian Navy’s Naval Aviation also signed a $160m contract for a major midlife upgrade of eight Lynx Mk21A helicopters. The first three of these aircraft will be delivered in 2018, while the complete batch is planned to be delivered by early 2019.
