Italian shipbuilding firm Fincantieri has delivered a new U212A Todaro-class submarine, Pietro Venuti, to the Italian Navy at its Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.
Pietro Venuti is the third of four Todaro submarines, which are being built as part of an order from the Italian Central Unit for Naval Armament (NAVARM).

The new submarine along with its twin unit Romeo Romei, which was launched at the Fincantieri shipyard last year, will replace the navy’s ageing Sauro-class Prini and Pelosi vessels.
The first and second vessels of this class, Todaro and Scirè, were delivered in 2006 and 2007 respectively. These two boats were built as part of the submarine construction project launched in 1994 with the German Submarine Consortium.
Featuring new technological solutions, the submarine has been constructed entirely using amagnetic material and advanced silencing techniques to minimise its acoustic signature.
With a capacity to accommodate a crew of 27, the 55.9m-long Pietro Venuti has a maximum diameter of 7m, surface displacement of 1,509t and can operate at a speed in excess of 16k.

By GlobalDataThe submarine is powered by a silent propulsion system based on fuel cell technology, which generates energy through an oxygen-hydrogen reaction. This allows the vessel to remain submerged for a longer duration.
It is also integrated with fully integrated electro-acoustic and weapon-control system, as well as a modern platform automation system.
