"The ship has been developed as part of a broad and innovative Italian-Algerian cooperation programme, which also includes Italian Navy to provide training of the ship’s first crew."

In 2011, the Algerian Ministry of Defence selected Italian company Orizzonte Sistemi Navali to develop landing and logistical support vessel for the Algerian Navy in the process of modernising and expanding its fleet, according to Defenceweb.co.za.

The BDSL, which has been launched following completions of two years of intensive work for the design and construction at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso yard, was recently transferred to Muggiano.

A conceptual and technological evolution of the Italian Navy’s San Giusto-class vessel, the BDSL is a latest generation multi-mission amphibious ship designed to provide wide flexibility of use and low operating costs.

Capable of accommodating a crew of about 600, the 8,800t vessel is scheduled to undergo series of trials in the coming months to complete its functional verification and to fine-tune the settings of the various on-board systems.
