Lockheed Martin carries out modernisation works on the heavyweight submarine-launched torpedoes in order to ensure that a sufficient number of ready-for-issue weapons are available to the US Navy’s Fleet Commanders.

In addition, the company conducts intermediate-level maintenance for both the exercise and wartime-ready ‘warshot’ configurations of the MK48 torpedoes.

The original contract was awarded to Lockheed Martin in March and the company has delivered specialised maintenance services for the MK48 torpedoes since 2007.

The MK48 heavyweight torpedo is capable of being carried by all US Navy submarines and has been designed to combat fast, deep-diving nuclear submarines, as well as high-performance surface vessels.
