A Naval Group Belgium-led European consortium has launched the Mine Risk Clearance for Europe (MIRICLE) project.

In July this year, Naval Group Belgium was selected as the project lead by the European Commission (EC) and approved by EU member states.

The consortium aims to develop a technology and roadmap for the next generation of European maritime mine countermeasure (MCM) capabilities.

The MIRICLE project primarily aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the MCM technologies.

It also seeks to coordinate the development of interoperable new assets and MCM Toolbox.

In addition, the project will allow significant enhancements to execute all MCM missions and will more specifically enable European navies to benefit from the highest ‘interoperable military MCM capabilities’, as per Nato recommendations.

Naval Group Belgium MIRICLE project coordinator Géraldine Dupin said: “Together, we are committed to help the European naval community to pursue the development of a breakthrough mine action capability.”

MIRICLE project is valued at $11.8m (€10m) and is being sponsored by the EC and eight EU member states.

The 24-month project will be implemented under the umbrella of the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) and aligns with the PESCO project Maritime semi- Autonomous Mine Counter Measures.

Consortium partners include Naval Group Belgium and its parent company Naval Group, ECA Robotics (France), Forceapp, Space Applications Services (Belgium), Thales, Cafa Tech, DotOcean, ECA Robotics (Belgium), TNO, Ośrodek Badawczo -Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej and other supporting companies.
