Motorola Solutions has been awarded a $29m critical communications contract option by the US Department of Defense (DoD).

Under the firm-fixed-price modification to contract awarded to Motorola Solutions on 16 December 2019, the company will continue to sustain the US Navy’s land mobile radio (LMR) system.

The contract has been signed with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (ATFP) Ashore Program.

The exercise of option year two is the third year of a multi-year agreement signed for essential communications.

It supports continued critical radio communications to coordinate deployments and response actions at the US Navy’s facilities around the world.

The LMR network also allows secure collaboration between the service’s emergency services and other state, federal, and local organisations involved in public safety.

Motorola Solutions Federal Government Markets vice-president and general manager Joe Balchune said: “The navy depends on reliable and interoperable communications every day to support their mission-critical operations and help ensure the safety of our service members at navy facilities around the world.

“We are honoured to continue to support the security, safety and success of the US Navy’s missions.”

Motorola Solutions will be responsible for handling hardware and software preventive maintenance, provide upgrades to technology and software, and carry out repair and replace equipment.

Furthermore, the company will management services for software licences, currency, asset and configuration, and other related support services.

In August last year, Motorola Solutions won a contract to provide digital terrestrial trunked radio networks for each of the German Navy’s 16 vessels and training platforms.
