The US Navy has awarded a follow-on contract to electronic systems technology provider Mikros Systems to continue developing condition-based maintenance (CBM) systems for the service’s MK 99 fire control system (FCS).

The company is currently developing a new variant of its adaptive diagnostic electronic portable testset (ADEPT) distance support sensor suite (ADSSS) under the initiative.

Mikros’ ADSSS is an advanced network-based remote monitoring and maintenance system, which gathers performance data in real-time and uses it to detect and predict failures.

"The expansion of the AN/SYM-3 system to the MK 99 FCS highlights the extensible nature of the system, and marks the third ship type utilising Mikros’ CBM+ system."

The system, known as AN/SYM-3, is currently used on-board the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) to monitor two other radars and combat system elements.

The new variant of the ADSSS system has been under development since last year and is expected to help monitor the director unit within the navy’s MK 99 FCS.

Mikros Systems chief operating officer Chuck Bristow said: “The expansion of the AN/SYM-3 system to the MK 99 FCS highlights the extensible nature of the system, and marks the third ship type utilising Mikros’ CBM+ system.

“Mikros is working with several other organisations inside and outside of the navy as we continue to expand the distribution of our remote monitoring and maintenance systems.”

The scope of the new $2.5m contract involves the further development, at-sea testing and validation of the Mikros system.

Mikros’ CBM technology will also be deployed on-board the US Navy’s Aegis surface combatant fleet of destroyers and cruisers for the first time under the arrangement.

The programme will be able to detect and predict failures on each navy vessel using model-based Prognostics Framework technology.

In addition, ‘big data’ predictive analytics will be applied on-shore using a machine learning approach in order to evaluate data from all ships and detect large-scale trends, patterns and anomalies.
