Lockheed Martin Canada has awarded a contract to Saab to deliver Sea Giraffe AMB naval radars for the Royal Canadian Navy’s new Protecteur-class joint support ships (JSS).

Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards is the prime contractor for Canada’s JSS programme. The company selected Lockheed Martin Canada to provide the command management system and integration for the JSS.

The Sea Giraffe AMB radars to be supplied by Saab will be part of the command management system for the new ships.

Saab will perform contractual work in Gothenburg in Sweden, and Halifax, Canada. The company expects to deliver radars between 2020 and 2022.

Saab senior vice-president and Surveillance business area head Anders Carp said: “We look forward to continuing to support the Royal Canadian Navy’s capabilities with our state-of the-art Sea Giraffe AMB radars.”

Protecteur-class JSS vessels are being built as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy.

Ships will be designed to serve as a flexible, multi-role, globally deployable and combat capable military platform.

Key functions that can be performed by the JSS include providing re-supply of fuel, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies between ships at sea and transporting cargo.

In addition, the new vessels will have the ability to support operations on shore and respond to threats in uncertain security environments.

Saab’s naval radars are already integrated into the Canadian Halifax-class patrol frigates.

The contract comes after Seaspan awarded a contract last week to MAN Energy Solutions Canada to provide power generation and propulsion systems for the JSS.
