The company will supply a 30mm cannon equipped RWS to the USMC.

Under the MADIS programme, the USMC will procure capabilities needed to perform active air defence against uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) threats.

It will provide a more ‘layered and integrated air defence umbrella’ that can detect, classify and destroy threats.

The contract has a cumulative value of $94m. It includes a set of low-rate initial production systems and full-rate production units.

This latest award follows a contract awarded by the USMC to Kongsberg last month for test articles and other activities, including design verification testing.

According to the company, Kongsberg’s RWS to MADIS uses technology and expertise drawn from other counter-UAS and air defence systems and is integrated on the joint light tactical vehicle (JLTV).

The company also noted that this RWS is the first 30mm weapon station integrated on the US JLTV platform.

Kongsberg Protech Systems USA is the subsidiary of Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace division director Pål E Bratlie said: “The US Marine Corps is investing heavily in new and modern solutions for ground-based air defence.

“This contract is an important milestone for Kongsberg and shows that we have technology and systems that can meet tomorrow’s challenges.

“Advanced anti-drone technology will increase the safety of ground forces.”

Kongsberg has so far delivered more than 20,000 units to over 20 countries across the world.

In December 2019, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace received a contract to provide a C-UAS solution to the German Armed Forces.
