Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has commenced fabrication of the US Navy’s San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship Harrisburg (LPD 30).

The latest move signifies the first 100t of steel cut.

Ingalls LPD programme manager Steve Sloan said: “LPD 30 is the start of an exciting new era for the San Antonio-class. The start of fabrication for Harrisburg marks the beginning of the LPD Flight II programme.

“Through learning structured around consistent production, we’ve been able to identify design and construction modifications to make future ships in the class more affordable while fulfilling navy and Marine Corps requirements.”

To date, Ingalls has successfully delivered 11 San Antonio-class ships to the navy. Three more vessels, including LPD 30, are under construction.

LPD 30 will be the 14th in the fleet of San Antonio-class vessels and the US Navy’s first Flight II LPD.

In March last year, HII secured a contract for construction of LPD 30. It is the second navy vessel named after the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Additionally, Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) was launched in March and will be delivered in 2021.

Separately, HHI won a contract to provide analytical support services to the US Special Operations Command’s (USSOCOM) Intelligence Directorate (J2).

The task order is part of the SOCOM-Wide Mission Support-A (SWMS-A) contract worth $22m.

The contract is valid for one year with three one-year period and one six-month optional extension period.

Technical Solutions’ Mission Driven Innovative Solutions president Garry Schwartz said: “SOCOM awarding this task order to HII again is stark recognition of our company’s performance and ability to get the job done.

“We will continue to provide high-quality analyses and assistance in carrying out all responsibilities required to support J2 intelligence missions.”
