Indra is set to deliver new satellite communications (satcom) systems to German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in order to improve stealth capacities of two submarines for the export market.
Under the terms of the deal, the company will deliver a Ku-band system installed on a three-axis stabilised platform in order to ensure that the ships will remain connected even in harsh conditions at sea.

Satcom terminals offer fast and secure communications with a greater bandwidth than line-of-sight (LoS) communications.
The higher data rate helps reduce the submarine’s exposure time on the surface, making it more difficult to be detected by radars of others vessels and aircraft.
This helps increase the stealth capacity of the submarines and ensures the safety of the crew.

By GlobalDataDesigned and marketed by Indra, the satcom terminals are developed both in military and commercial frequencies, which mean that the vessel can benefit from maximum coverage anywhere across the globe on operations and manoeuvres with various satellite operators.
In the near future, the Indra system will be tested in military Ka-Band, which will provide greater bandwidth than the X Band presently used by several navies.
Since 2009, the company has served as a technology supplier for TKMS with the delivery of the first satcom terminals and electronic defence systems for the Germany Navy’s U212-class submarines.
Indra has partnered with TKMS to deliver its submarine satcom systems to the Portuguese, Italian and Turkish navies and other navies across the world.
